Miguel Ruiz and Linkin Park

For this blog post, I want you to consider the main texts (Miguel Ruiz) we have studied the last few days. Think of the songs we listened to in class (Numb and Somewhere I Belong) and the implications of their messages. How are these texts talking back to one another? What conversation are they entering? What seems to be the central argument for each? For this post, I want you to pull a quote from each text and compose a paragraph (minimum) response that connects the big ideas to the two texts.

  1. The texts we read in class (Miquel Ruiz) and the songs we listened to (Somewhere I belong and Numb) are both realated in some way. Both texts involve the same consept, what is your personal opinion? Also if your opinion or view is the truth or not. An example from the artical, What kind of Messager are you? is "Everyone of us uses the word to form our opinions, to express our point of view." That also aplies to the songs, Some where I belong and Numb, both by Linkin Park. One quote from Somewhere i belong that corrdinates with the main idea is, "..Is the only real thing i got left to feel." A quote from Numb is, "Im becoming this all i want to do is be more like me and be less like you."

  2. (I've misplaced my Miguel Ruiz texts) These texts are talking back to one another because they kind of say the same message. They both say that we shouldn't let what other people say and think put us down. The texts are entering the conversation of how you personally think about life and how you view life. They also enter the conversation of not letting other people influence how you think. The central argument for each of the articles is that people opress others far to easily and this holds us back from using our full potential because we begin to think that no matter what we do it will never be enough for others.

  3. The central argument of each article and song is about how everyone today is trying to be accepted and be “normal”. Today there is a stereo type about the normal person what they like what’s cool what’s not what looks good what doesn’t. For example in the song numb “I'm tired of being what you want me to be Feeling so faithless lost under the surface don’t know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes “he talks about how everyone feels they have to be this way and if they are not this way and they are themselves they will not be liked. In the article the power of doubt “Everything you think about yourself, everything you believe about yourself, is because you learned it. You learned the opinions from Mom, Dad, siblings and society. They sent all those images of how a body should look; they expressed all those opinions about the way you are, the way you are not, the way you should be. They delivered a message, and you agreed with that message. And now you think so many things about what you are, but are they the truth? “ He talks about how everything you think about yourself is just based off of others opinions and you don’t really change your appearance because you like the look, you want to look good for others.

  4. In each article and song it talks about how society wants us to be. In the article about skeptical people they talk about how there is no universal book of looks and that you shouldn't believe what anyone says. This connects to Numb "I want to more like me and be less like you" it's showing someone who wants to be themselves and not be jydge by who they truly are. The central argument about each article and song is that you shouldn't want to be like anyone else and you should be yourself no matter what anyone else or 'society' thinks about you. They each have the same general big idea and its that you shouldn't care about anyone else opinions but, your own. And even your opinions shouldn't be bounced off of someone elses.

  5. The songs do have some connections to Miguel Ruiz's text because the songs make the person who is expressing themselves seem like they are hopeless and this is sending a message to his or herself which makes them feel hopeless because they believe they are hopeless. There is also the message where the person feels like they are being forced to seem normal or "go with the crowd" and this is sending a message to everyone else that they are normal and they are in no way different. They may not realize that they are making themselves hopeless by sending themselves the wrong message. All of the person's views are negative which is most likely giving off a negative message which makes them miserable.

  6. With these two songs and these two articles, the main idea for the both of them were as to what peoples messages are and how they portray themselves. The songs have to do more of fitting in, and how you do not belong because everyone is differnt and everyone has a different message and how nobody trust nobody becuase of how everything around us are lies.
The two articles mainly focus on how peoples lives are just lies, and how everyone questions themselves and are never certain becuase they dont want to be different, so they all just live a life of lie to fit in. In the article, The Power of Doubt: When Being Skeptical Is a Good Thing, Miguel Ruiz says "If you're suffering, it's because you're telling yourself a story that isn't true, but you believe it." Also in the song, Numb, by Linkin Park, they say "All i want to do is be more like me and less than you." These two quotes are just like each other, because in the first quote from the article, Miguel is talking about how eveyrone is living their life as a lie and they think that is how they are suppose to live their life becuase of what they see and hear around them. Whereas with the song, the quote i choosing had to do about how they figured out that they life they were living was someone elses and not theirs, that they were living a lie trying to be someone who they weren't just to fit in.

  7. From the song "numb" by linkin park, the quote that I thought was most important was "I'm tired of being what you want me to be." I thought this was important because people are always trying to fit in these days. They struggle and don't succeed, and break themselves down because of one small flaw that they can't seem to ignore. Although people are fighting the urge to be different, they are also fighting the urge to be the same. In a sense that, they don't want to be hated for something that they do that is different, but they don't want to be hating for following a crowd either. All together, the quote is crying out to be an individual without being criticized. This is the big idea of this quote.

From the other song, "Somewhere I belong" I think the most important quote is "I will never know myself until I do this on my own." I think this is the most important quote because it's true. No matter how much people might get help, no one will ever truely know themselves until they find out on their own. It's like if someone is choosing what they are going to major in college. As much help as they get from their family and teachers, in the end they have to decide on their own. This reflects who this person is as a person and who they will be for the rest of their life. This is why I thought this was the best quote from the song "Somewhere I Belong" by Linkin Park.

  9. I feel like both the songs and the texts were talking about how people act around other people and lies. The song numb has always been a favorite of mine and I feel like its about someone who is tired of trying to impress others by being someone they aren't. I feel like people lie everyday about who they are and how they feel just so they can get good judgment and feedback from others who they feel that they have to impress. In the text what I mainly thought about was how do we know if we're lying if someone told us a lie was true? Does that mean that not one person is honest? I feel like the texts contradicted themselves though because they were saying that what everyone teaches you could be a lie because of beliefs or not like something like Santa Claus for example, but the text was trying to get us to believe what they said, so how do we know that what they're saying is true? How do we know anything is ever really truth or lies? I believe that if everyone acted like themselves all the time we wouldn't have the problems in the world that we have today. I almost wish people couldn't tell a lie and maybe that would make the world a better place because everyone was honest with each other about anything and everything.
