Today in class we brainstormed a list of words people should know and use in order to talk about the humanities and the issues raised. Using your six words, compose a well written paragraph explaining and summarizing what you know so far.

  1. What I know about humanities so far, is that it doesn't really have anything to do with math or science. It is about the study and orgins of man kind. Also about the history of the human race. The main topics this falls under is, history, english/ lititure, religon, philosphy and society. It has to do with peoples belifes and their way of life, what ever culture they are. And human nature.
The book Life of Pi, falls under these catorgorys throughout the story.

  2. Jordan, take the time to expand your writing and get your thoughts down. You seem to have a good start, do more with it. Also, careful of spelling and punctuation.

  3. Humanities has to do a lot with human nature and the different culture. It also has to do with the thoughts of others and the society. The humanity and humanities have different power but there is a connection between them. They balanced with the faith.

  5. What I learned about so far is that humanities is the study of the human condition, using methods that are primarily analytic, critical or speculative. This ties into the Life Of Pi because it shows his self reflection throughout the book, which connects to faith, human nature and religion. The culture of Life Of Pi also involves his faith in God, not only in one religion either.

  6. The humanities so far, to me, include more of the philosophy and origin aspects rather than religion, litterature and art. Though these things are also taught and studied, i feel as though they are not the main focus. Religion is a big part of the study as also seen in The Life of Pi but the philosophy behind what started the religion or where the religion it's self was origanated from seems more of the main idea or focus. This is prevelent in "Willingness to be disturbed" because the philosophy behind the human thought process and the origin of it all was basically what it was written about.

  7. Great observation, Katelynn! Keep this in mind as we proceed forward with Dante's Inferno and other texts.

  8. Humanities to me are the study of human nature and human condition shown through literature, art, history, language and such. Humanities also have to do with the society people live in and human culture. Humanities tie into the “Life of Pi” because the book works around three main religions, not just one. The book talks about Hinduism, Christianity, and Islamic religions, which shows that Pi wants to believe in all different things and not just one certain religion. What happened to Pi was fate, and God is the person in charge of choosing one person’s faith. Faith is what you believe in, and what you believe will happen to you. Humanities also ties in “Willing to Be Disturbed” because it talks about what the human nature is really about. This article talks about what peoples thoughts are actually like, and how relationships with our pairs are just us being fake and not being real with each other. People are always curious about everything, but no one ever speaks up because they are scared to be judged and what not. Everyone is afraid of new things and change, but faith is what really makes everyone change without them even knowing. That is how humanities relates to the “Life of Pi” and also “Willing to Be Disturbed”.

  9. What i learned about humanities so far is that it is the study of human nature dealing with religion, society, culture, and faith. it deals with religon because in Life of Pi, Pi deals with three religions which are Hindu, Christianity, and islam and he is trying to find the perfect one. Faith also deals with the Life of Pi because he uses faith to find the best religion.

  10. The six words i choose connected to all the pieces of literature we've read and the book we are going to read were, faith, belief, human nature, piousness, questions, and expression. i choose faith and belief beacause they both tie into the major theme of religon. i choose human nature because that is one of the things we studied in humanities. the word pious i also choose for the connection to religon. i also choose questions because in order to have a full opinion of something you had to of questioned another opinion or even your own at one point. the last word i choose was expression because in the book Life of Pi, Pi chooses to express his faith to God in three different religions and he expressed his faith to the officers in Mexico.

  11. When I think of humanities, I think of the study of human conditions, and the methods used to study them. Also, I think of humanists, who told people to live life to the fullest! Some of the methods to studying humanities are by studying faith, religion, destiny, culture, individualism, and curiosity. These words connect to 'Life of Pi' for several reasons. The word faith had to do with this book because Pi expressed his faith in three different religions, to which he practiced all three faithfully. Religion has to do with 'Life of Pi' because it revolves around Pi's curiosity for different beliefs, which brings me to my third word. Also, the destiny has to do with this book because Pi clearly had a destiny to be in a certain place at a certain time, otherwise he wouldn't have been this individual (fourth word). Lastly, 'Life of Pi' had to do with culture because that was one of the major book themes. All these words have to do with 'Willingness to be Disturbed' because they are all incorporated into the concept of letting go of what you know & letting yourself be vulnerable to confusion. This is how my six words connected with 'Life of Pi' and 'Willingness to be Disturbed'.

  12. Humanities to me is the broad study of what it means to be human. No other species of animal on this earth is able to experience most the of things we experience. I believe that the study of humanities is important because it allows us to better understand ourselves and humanity's actions as a whole. Human nature is often mysterious because people will act in different ways in different situations. It is human nature to be social and try to make new friends where a crazed hobo will want to be alone and does not require friends. Relationships are important to humans because we are very social and we always try to develop relationships with each other whether they are good or bad depending on the actions that the people make. Balance is what most people try to achieve but it is often not possible because humans often make mistakes or errors which can possibly tip the balance often making something one sided or unfair causing conflict. Thoughts are one of many things that humans are able to do because we are able to analyze things like no other animal or think about something that is troubling us and find some solutions. In "The Life of Pi" Pi, often finds himself thinking about things that are troubling him and he was also able to deal with a problem like Richard Parker. Philosophy is a major part of the study of Humanities and this is because there is no possible way for humanists to completely understand the study of humanities because every single human being acts differently so a lot of philosophical implications are made to help understand humans but not completely discover them. Connection is a very important part of the human condition and this is so because humans are often trying to find connections with new people just like in the book "The Life of Pi" Pi gets lonely so he decides to have Richard Parker as a friend and this is prevalent in real life because people who tend to be on the lonesome tend to make friends which are often animals or in someone stranded on a island's case a coconut. All of these terms have a great deal to do with the study of humanities and it is vital to learn these to better understand this field of study.

  13. Great posts, folks! I appreciate those who took the time to think through their thoughts and expand their writing. Your connections are clear and support the text.

Duncan, I especially like how you highlight the term philosophy. This is a CRUCIAL concept to our class.

For some, please consider expanding your writing, online and in class. This is an opportunity to work the kinks out and practice writing to a prompt.

  14. Humanities to me is the study of human nature by using methods that are primarily analytic, critical or speculative. The six words I chose are: History; because "history always repeats itself' and people learn to make advances in their life by looking back on how far humans have come and how they went about creating technology to live and learn from others mistakes. Languages and Communication; because without that we may not be able to study the behavior of humans, and because it gives us a good idea on how society has grown. Literature; because when you look at literature it gives you an idea on how humans think and look at things in life. Culture; because it shows not physically but mentally how humans think about things and what they believe. Lastly I have Religion; because based on religion you can see how people view the world and see what they believe in not just like I believe the sky is blue but like beliefs in why life is the way it is and how everything came about.
